Your customers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google which business to choose. The answer they receive names a few businesses, each with a link to its site.
GEO organises your business's content, facts and profiles so that AI tools find them and quote them in their answers. We recommend starting it together with SEO, because AI tools draw their sources from pages they have already indexed.

Businesses that want AI tools to recommend them when a customer asks for a recommendation.

How it finds pages
ChatGPT finds pages through OAI-SearchBot. When robots.txt lets it in, your pages are available for its search answers.
Microsoft Copilot cites pages as sources in its answers. Bing Webmaster Tools shows how often yours are chosen, while Bing Places and IndexNow keep their details current.
SEO and GEO work on the same pages. SEO brings them into Google's results and GEO into the answers of AI tools.

For Google, optimising for AI answers is still SEO. That is why we recommend GEO and SEO together: they share the same foundation, so every improvement pays off in both.
The research shows that a page's content and sources bring presence in AI answers, even when the page does not hold first place on Google.

Frequently asked questions
What is GEO?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the work that helps a business get cited as a source in the answers of AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. It covers content that answers customers' questions, facts with sources, access for AI crawlers and up-to-date business profiles.
Does GEO need SEO to work?
Yes, GEO needs SEO to work, because AI tools draw their answers from pages they have already found and indexed. According to Google, for a page to appear as a link in an AI Overview, it has to be indexed in Search and eligible for a snippet. We recommend starting GEO together with the site's SEO foundation.
Which AI tools do you work on?
We work on the AI tools that draw their answers from the web: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. Each tool finds pages in its own way, for example ChatGPT through OAI-SearchBot and Perplexity through PerplexityBot. That is why we check access for each one separately.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
No, an llms.txt file is not needed for Google, which states that its Search does not use it. It is a proposed standard read mainly by AI assistants when a user asks them for something specific. We focus on what AI tools read on every search: the content, crawler access and the business profiles.
How is presence in AI answers measured?
Presence in AI answers is measured with Google's and Microsoft's reports and with a fixed set of questions. Search Console shows how often your pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, while Bing Webmaster Tools shows how often they are cited in Copilot. Alongside that, we put the same questions to every AI tool each month and record which businesses are mentioned.
How much does GEO cost?
The cost of GEO depends on the pages, facts and profiles that need work. We start with the initial analysis and present the plan together with the monthly cost before we begin. If you are aiming at both Google and AI tools, we recommend GEO and SEO together, because they share the same foundation.
