SEO for small businesses: what actually matters
Forget the magic tricks and "guaranteed" rankings. What SEO really is, where a small business gains the most, and how long it honestly takes.
Odysseus Web

If you run a business, you've probably received the email: "Your site isn't on the first page of Google — we'll get it there, guaranteed." SEO is one of the most misunderstood terms in this industry, and one of the easiest to be mis-sold. Let's sort out what's actually true.
What SEO really is
Google has one goal: to show the user the best possible result for what they searched. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) means helping the engine understand that, for specific searches, the best answer is you — because your site is relevant, fast, trustworthy, and answers the question fully.
Two things follow from that, and they're worth holding onto. SEO isn't a button you press once and walk away from — it's a property of your site and your content, built over time. There are also no tricks that fool Google permanently: whatever worked as a trick yesterday becomes a reason for demotion tomorrow.
The technical foundations — without these, nothing
- Speed: the site opens fast on a phone with mediocre signal, not just on your office connection.
- Mobile: a large share of searches now happens on phones — the experience there also decides your ranking.
- HTTPS: a basic precondition of trust, for users and engines alike.
- Clean structure: proper page titles, descriptions, headings and a sitemap, so Google can read the site without obstacles.
Local SEO: the fastest win
For a business serving a specific area — a gym, a clinic, a real-estate office, a restaurant — the searches that matter are local: "hair salon in Peristeri", "accountant near me". There, the highest-return first step isn't even the website: it's your Google Business Profile — the card that appears on the map and beside the results.
- Fill it in completely: correct category, opening hours, phone, photos, services.
- Ask happy customers for reviews — and reply to all of them, including the negative ones, calmly.
- Keep your name, address and phone identical across site, profile and directories.
- Link it to your website — and make sure the site clearly states your area and services.
Content makes the difference
Your customers ask Google the same questions they ask you on the phone: how much does it cost, how does it work, what should I watch out for, what's the difference between two options. Every such question is an opportunity for a page or an article that answers it better than anyone — exactly like the one you're reading now.
Start with your services: one clean, complete page for each, written in the customer's language rather than the technology's. Continue with articles that resolve real doubts. A few good texts, updated when the facts change, are worth far more than many rushed ones.
How long it takes — the honest answer
The first measurable movement usually shows within two to three months, and the real picture within six to twelve — depending on how competitive your target searches are. "Lawyer Athens" is a much harder target than "employment lawyer Chalandri". That's also why SEO is priced as ongoing work, not a one-off "setting".
Where to start — as soon as tomorrow
Measure where you stand
Search for your main services on Google the way a customer would. Where do you appear? Who appears instead of you?

Speed, mobile, HTTPS, titles and descriptions. It's the foundation for everything that follows — and usually work that's done once.
Set up your Google Business Profile properly
An hour of work today, benefits for years — especially if your customers are local.
Write about what you get asked
Keep a list of your customers' questions and answer them one by one, in service pages and articles.
